Priority
Students need to understand priority, it is not a priority to have class time to complete homework instead it should be done at home
I agree with you. I find students have been better at understanding the "home" part of homework since we have included it in their syllabus. Also, it is emphasized to them when they are signing up for courses that there is required assignments to be done outside of the classroom.
I think your method will help students to create a good learning habits. I think you found very good way for student to beginn the course succesfully
Mitchell, What a wonderful approach. I really like your thinking. You know, some instructors assign reading their course lectures to their students for homework and focus on interactive activities like problem solving when in the classroom. The classroom experience becomes a place to apply what you learned.

I agree with your statement, however, in my accounting classes, I have found it effective to assign homework problems, and then spend the last 15 minutes or so working one of the problems in class, with several students making trips to the whiteboard to participate. It becomes a review tool, as well as getting the students started on the assignment.
Maria, So true. Sometimes it is frustrating to have to remind students of this as it seems obvious to us. Little reminders do make a difference though.

I definitely agree. Homeworks should be completed before class starts otherwise they will not be able to concentrate on the lesson while rushing to complete their assignments.
