Priority

Students need to understand priority, it is not a priority to have class time to complete homework instead it should be done at home

Nanette, That sounds like a tough challenge. I recommend encouraging students to complete homework at home and allowing them to experience the consequences of not doing so. While this approach is heavy handed, it will prepare them best to manage through similar real world situations when they graduate.

Students in my class do not understand the concept that homework should be done at home. If we do not allow them time to complete the assignment it doesn't get done.

Francine,

I think you make an excellent point. There have been many times that my students get upset because they don't have class time to complete homework. I seem to constantly have to remind them that homework is to be done at HOME and if they finish classwork early then perhaps they may have a few minutes for homework. When I think back to when I was in school, there was never time for homework while at school so I'm shocked that students often think there should be designated homework time during class.

Francine, So true. I can't tell you the number of times I have seen students doing that. My best recommendation is to set clear expectations for what will be happening in class. A little structure can go a long way.
