Setting Time Boundries with Students
Therapist have been using this technique for years yet we often forget that it can be a useful tool in education. By helping the student for pre set amount of time you can set the expectations for them as to what the session will accomplish and also helps them understand up front that you will be teaching them not doing something for them. It keeps the personal responsibility in thier lap. This is especially true in Career Services where we are teaching the students to fish every day, not feeding them a fish fry dinner.
Lori,
I really do understand where you are coming from. I too have multiple roles and there just doesn't seem like enough hours in my day.
I agree also. Time boundaries will help students to be accountable on the job as well as completing work skill in a timely manner.
Lori, Wow, sounds like you are balancing a lot of different roles with varied demands. That can be tough. Yes, setting boundaries and really setting expectations with the people who you work with could be the key to your success in managing through each day. Don't be afraid to be realistic with your expectations of yourself too.

I feel that I can use this in my interactions with students. I am currently the only full time instructor and program chair in my department.
I have 2 part time people who only work 4 hours each a week.
I have to budget my time very carefully. This will help me to give each student and equal chance for help
I agree. Setting time boundries with students will hold the students accountable for time management and completing tasks on time.
Great idea. I will put this into action the start of our quarter and see if I can get my students more accountable
This is an excellent way to teach students to be accountable. Accountability is lacking today. We can start each class by discussing what their expectations are of you, and what your expectations are of them. You can make it clear what needs to be done and when.
Kathy, That's a great approach. I particularly like the interactivity piece. Often times, listening to lectures can be such a passive way of learning. Engaging in question and answer dialog and even taking a 'choose your own adventure' approach can enhance learning significantly.

It is hard sometimes to put a time limit on tutoring. Since I find this hard , I instead limit the topic. Instead of all leacture we went over Thursday, I make them choose topics on the lecture that they need help on. Just like you, Natalie it then puts the limitations and the expectations on the student.
