Immediacy

It was helpful to read about task prioritization and how being too high-strung or "immediate" can also be a hindrance to quality instruction. Personally, I struggle more w/ that than procrastination.

I totally agree with you I tend to feel like I need to get everything done and not leave work for tomorrow. I do like to prioritizing the list and with the new year I am going to give this a better try because the other way tends to get me stressed and overwhelmed.

Cindy, I know where you are coming from and a lot of instructors feel the same way! It's hard to make people wait, especially when they are counting on you. I like to take a step back and ask myself "what's a reasonable amount of time for getting things back to students?" Often times, instant feedback is not merited but working hard to ensure it happens quick enough is best.

I feel overwhelmed when I need to get things done immediately, I don't like letting the students wait for their grades, after they worked so hard and studied for the exam.

I sttuggle with this. I like to get things done immediately, so the students don't have to wait on their grades.

I am just like you, I need to have things done immediately, I will now prioritize and get things done by importance.

Thomas, It sounds like you have struck a healthy balance between staying on top of things and taking the time you need for you. We all have a lot to learn from that balanced approach as it is not easy to achieve.

Monica, I understand where you are coming from and a lot of people in our field are in the same boat. At a guess, immediacy got you where you are in life. So in part, it has been a good thing. That being said, it's important to take some time for you every now and then.

I too struggle more with Immediacy. I need to learn that it is ok not to get everything on my list completed in one day, there is always tomorrow.

I think there is a middle ground and a place for immediacy. For example, I stay after class and grade all the exams before I leave the school. The next day, I enter the grades into my grade book and handle other tasks that need to be done. I do like getting things off my to-do list but I also recognize when I am tired and when to put things off to tomorrow and reduce stress by watching a show or seeing a movie.
