Designers are artists
A lot of them don't take designing their projects seriously. I tell them to look at designs that are like the one they are working on and they will have a better feel for what needs to be done. But 80% never take the time to do this. Then I show them what I mean and they get it, but they still don't implement. The students finally do this, and have a successful piece of work but by this time it's usually too late to hand it in.
Jennifer, I don't understand it either but I too have observed the benefits for some people. This is a great example of how different motivational techniques work well for different people. We cannot necessarily take a one-size-fits-all approach to accomplishing priorities, and doing great work.

I agree. I don't understand why "working under pressure" is going to create better revision breakdown and will cause inspiration. But yes, students that apply it are definetly more successful.
I find students want to jump right into their own project instead of taking time to plan what they want their work to look like.
I try to spend time each day working on the 'creativity' aspect of designing. We look at other works first to see where we can draw inspiration from.
