Grading graphic design projects?

Anyone have any ways to speed up grading graphic design projects?

I have rubrics in place, grading based on thumbnails, concept, execution and craftsmanship.

But... I feel like it takes a lifetime to grade 18 students?

I deal with it and it doesn't deter me from teaching, but wow, it takes a lot of time.

Any suggestions?

I love your approach for a few reasons Alexander. Creating a critique sheet really helps students orient towards delivering what you are looking for. Also, self evaluation post presentation is a great way to get students thinking.

I agree as well with teaching design/graphic courses the best way to assess the process the students are developing is with in class presentation and critiques to their fellow students and outside guests as well. I have used critique sheets as a type of score card with individual categories such as: graphic/design/craft/presentation/etc.. listed in matrix to be filled out and given to each student in the class to fill out. At the end of the presentation the students then collect all the cards for their own project and have a way of evaluating their progress through the project. It also give me a chance to see how students are evaluating themselves in regard to how I see them developing as well.

I happen to know a number of instructors who use this approach - and they love it. The presenting student discusses conceptual development, etc. as well as problems encountered (and how they were overcome).
The rest of the class observes, and offers feedback (critique). I prepare my project spec sheets in the form of a checklist … so students can check items off as they implement them and I can check them off while they're presenting.

Great question Danielle! Some graphic design instructors ask their students to present their designs during class. It's a great learning experience for the student presenters as they must articulate design concepts used to others. The student audience learns about various design perspectives. And for the instructors, grading can then happen during class hours.
