Electronic Grade Book
I find this to be a time saver, along with on line disscussion groups to answer question.
Sounds excellent John. It's wonderful when students can check their grades themselves. Gives us so much more time to focus on other things to serve them -- like class prep and office hours.
We're currently using an Electronic Grade Book and we're rapidly moving toward on e that students can access to check their grades and progress.
The elctronic grade book literally makes us more efficient!

I like the fact that students can always see how they are doing, what they are missing, etc. We can also print out very detailed student grade reports, etc. All around great tool!
Scott
Agreed. I think this is the ONLY way to go!
Scott
is there a particular electronic grade book program that you would recommend?
I agree it is a time saver and it also helps the students keep track of their performance as the course progresses along. Graphical analysis of grades will also help instructors see how well each student is performance in comparison to the entire class.
I would like to start using an online gradebook. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start?
I love the online grade book and so do my students. They know exactly where they are at in the course and it alerts me to a student that may need help.
This is an important point Ronald. Electronic grade books make you both faster and more accurate if you use them correctly.
Yes the electronic grade book is a life saver no more mistake in the math !!!!!!!!!!!!
egb has a lot of positive values but some of the things that you are doing can not be done at the school i am in, such as reviewing test in class.
Thanks for the tip Holly! This looks like a helpful resource that other instructors could benefit from.
THIS IS A TIME SAVER WHEN IT COMES TO A QUIZ. I LIKE TO SEE THE WORKINGS OF THE STUDENTS MINDS IN ESSAY TESTS BECAUSE SOME OF THE TIME THEY HAVE TROUBLE PUTTING THINGS IN WORDS. THE ESSAY THAT I GIVE THEM IS RESTRICTED TO ONE TO ONE NAD A HALF PAGES OF WELL THOUGHT OUT DIRECTION BEFORE TH PROCEED WITH IT BEING A SINGLE TOPIC.
I se Engrade (www.engrade.com). It is free and allows you to set up course and assignment weighting at the click of a button. Students can create a free account and then log in to check their own grades. It saves time on all fronts.
I finally got my grading 100% electronic with Excel. It auto calculate final grade as each grade is entered and prints a final grade sheet for each student once the projects are turned in. It is great at least until my chair decides to go in a different direction with my course and I have to change everything.
The set up I have now has evolved gradually over the last 5 years. I definitely appreciate the devlopment time I've invested when it comes to the end of the term and needing to get grades turned in. Once my tests are graded, a couple of minutes to type in the test grades, and all calculations are done : ) As I tell my students, "Excel is my friend."
I remember when I had to do all grades by calculator. Took an hour or more for just a single class--mutiplied by 6 or 7 classes. Killed more than 1 calculator that way.
It sounds like you have an excellent system already in place Deb. There is always room for improvement. At the same time, sometimes you have to just take a step back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
I can't even begin to calculate the amount of time my system has saved me. I know I can create forms in a matter of less than 10 minutes that take colleagues much more time to accomplish. Not to mention the immediacy of updated grades, including the letter grade.
