I find that using previous instructor's materials helps new instructors organize their class assignments as well as lectures. This has been a help to me when I started teaching; this helped me to develop new ideas for my class.
Yes, so true Dori. Whenever your administration asks you to teach a new class, always ask around to see if any course materials already exist. You never know what you will find. This method also works well for courses you've been teaching for a while. Sometimes you'll find that another instructor has a better system that you can easily adopt.
