Students grading each other's work

I have a real problem with students grading someone else's work especially quizzes or exams. I strongly feel that we need to keep the confidentiality of the students' grades. Having another student grade a peer's paper especially if the peer did poorly can have a huge effect on the peer's self-esteem. The peer may believe that the student grading their paper thinks they are incompetent or even dumb. Even though grading the papers myself may take time, I do it to maintain the confidence of my students. I have found several ways to make it quicker. One is to use an answer sheet where I only see the student's answers and not the questions. I then use the key to check it quickly. I have also used online tests, so the test software grades it for me. The students would receive their grades as soon as they say submit much like the quizzes in this training course.

I been having the same problem with this method.

Stefano, Wow, a 10 week semester sounds tough. Sometimes when semesters are that short, there is really no way we can streamline our efforts any more than we already have. In these cases, we've got to set our expectations about how much we can accomplish.

I would actually love to try this method if we did not have to cover so much material in only ten weeks and every minute of lecture time were not compromised by mandatory meetings for student career development. It would save me so much time and would make grading a stimulating activity!

I agree, I prefer to grade papers myself it lets me recognize when a student does not understand the concept of the material. Or, if a large amount of students miss certain parts, assess, review, and then re test to verify the students grasped the concept.

I prefer not to have students grade their peers assignments. However I will have my students critique the peers cooking tasks from time to time.

Should never happen, cause insecureity in class.

Positive statement! I agree with having other students grade each others work. I feel that a teacher that passes the buck to the students to grade papers is just being lazy. Format your tests so that the grading portion can be completed in a snap. The "answer sheet" from the previous post is a great tool.

Indeed true Gilbert! Just a small extra layer of confidentiality can open up a whole new way of grading.

That is a great idea using the numbers on the tests instead of names, this removes the negative attention poor performing students might get from their peers.

That's tough Sam and I understand why you reacted in the way you did. It's possible to prevent this kind of problem too. You can randomly copy a few tests before student grading and then do cross checks after grading to ensure accuracy.

I had one class where we regularly had the students grade each others quizzes. Some students started to arrange themselves in order to grade their friend's work and fill in any empty answers.

I know this is only one example, but it makes me shy away from this technique.

I agree, I think this adds additional stress to the student and can create conflict in the class if the student grading the paper make a comment about the other students grade.

I agree - I do not like to have student's work checked by a peer. Using an answer key makes it easier to correct and computerized tests make scoring easy and confidential.

I don't agree with students grading each other's tests. I have found (the hard way) that it's not reliable. It also interferes with the right to privacy and can cause students embarrasment.

I have tried having a class grade each others' tests. Students would rather an instructor grade their exam over another student.

Sounds like a great system Kathleen and one that is working well for you. Keep it up!

Melissa, I often use a grade sheet to return the test or quizzes to the students in a more timely fashion.

It does free up some time for you. But what if you were the student that did poorly on the exam? How would you feel? So I rarely use this approach.
