The scantron machine is a fantastic time saver Laura. You will be amazed at how much it can help you, especially with large class sizes and with several classes who take the same exam. Definately give it a try.
I used to always do a short-essay form with my exams. Thinking about those final exams and then having the time crunch to grade them, and get my grades entered on time was always stressful. I will now most certainly be changing my test format to key word, or multiple choice. Using the scantron grading machine has always intimidated me, but I have been told that once you are shown how to use it, it is really quite simple and grading is done in a snap! I guess it's time for me to embrace technology and let it work for me!

It depends on whether I am teaching an academic or lab class. If I am teaching a lab class the exams are provided by the school and there's not much I can do about that. However, in academic classes I generally try to balance my exams between T/F, multiple choice, short answer, and a short essay. The essay question is the point of the material where I am really looking for the ability to comprehend and apply, while the rest is more to see if they know critical aspects.
Yes, a few adjustments can always be made. And sometimes small tweaks can really make a huge difference!

Wow, cutting the grading process in half is fantastic work Lawrence. Sounds like your time spent reformatting was well worth the effort.
We have gone through the process of formatting and re-formatting until, we have final gotten the process down now were it only takes 1/2 the time of what it use to.
Simple short answer questions are indeed easier to grade over long paragraphs!
I do not assign any homework other than readings. All of my tests are designed to be a combination of multiple choice, short answer or true/false. However, I can see that in the short answer options, it would be useful to make it simpler to reply rather than writing out short paragraphs. John Eliassen
I will use more online formats to speed up my work
Presently, having each question marked as to how many points they're worth. Also clearly printed text that is blocked/spaced helps me with grading.
In the future I would like to provide exams and homework assignments online. I realize the work will be to set it up, saving time later.
A security factor would have to be in place.
What an excellent system William. And if they do a nice job cooking, enjoyable too!
I agree. In my classes I grade cooking practical exams. When I am fnished eating each plate the grades are done.
If I were going to change my exam format I would have multiple choice and fill in the blank. Fill in don't take very long. You should prepare for at least one essay a term. This will let you know if the student is really grasping the material.
