Space and things
My school is very small, I haven't space for my things. I need to move my books, quiz,pencils, pens,etc inside to the big handbag, this is terrible. What I can do?
I also had this issue. All I wanted was a corner somewhere to call my own so that I wasn't teaching out of my trunk. I went to my admin and now have my own desk where I can have my things and be more productive.
Kathaleen, Love your perspective and so true about the smiles. Sometimes, getting what you need is about being good to others, building relationships and telling people what will make you most productive.

Thankfully speaking to my administration was very understanding as i also experienced a shortage of space. They offered me cases and folders for both documents and pens ect. I was glad i spoke up as it was getting overwhelming with all i had to haul around
We had a very similar situation at our school. Some departments had space for everyone, some had people sharing space, and some had no space at all for anyone other than the department head. The instructor had to work around when the dept. head was in her/his office or use the computer in the classroom outside of classtime. We approached the administration (as Ronald suggested)for over a year. Finally we were able to obtain a desk which the instructor shared with two other instructors from another department. Then after a year of that, the instructor actually received a very small desk to call his own and three months later a phone and computer. Some times you have to be the squeeky wheel - but maintain a very positive attitude about it. A smile will often get you places.
Ronald, Taking a step back, it looks like you realize the cascade effect of not having your own space. Sometimes it's critical to get in front of challenges like this before so many other things are impacted. I like the way you work with your administration early to ensure you have what you need to be productive.

Work with the adminstration to assist in finding a space for your items. This way you can claim an area to be yours and handle all or part of your items. In doing so you will better orgainize yourself and perhapes even be able to point out the need to have space available to you and your fellow co-workers to have more space available for all of you. Which will assist in better being able to facilitate the instructors and faculty and orgainize yourselves so you can have a better enviroment to work within and produce a better results. Vice having to pack and unpack all the time.
