Any tips for grading long essays?

Knowing the important concepts and keywords that you expect students to know, you can start by identifying these concepts (step 1) and then evaluate the depth of their coverage of it based on the grading rubric for the assignment. The grading rubric can simplify the process is assigning a final grade to the paper. Each concept covered has specific weight (and score) both for the mention of it and the various degree of coverage provided. I have used this simple techniques for a while and it seem to have been working well.
Carol, Absolutely! We recommend asking students to underline or highlight the most important parts of their answers. This allows you to detect the content that is most important in essay questions as quickly and easily as you can.
