Short Answer Quizzes

I teach writing classes, and I find it much easier to have the students take short answer quizzes, as opposed to all essays all the time. It gives them a chance to demonstrate more knowledge on different questions, and improves their ability to be concise when answering a prompt.

John, I understand where you are coming from. Different testing methods tell us different things about student comprehension. Multiple choice offer fast grading but don't always deeply test knowledge.

I have found that having students write their answer to a question is far more revealing as to their level of understanding of the material that has been covered.

I agree and I think it gives the student time to process the material and putting it in their own words helps me know if the student is understanding the material

I like short answer quizzes, as well. While students should be encouraged to discuss topics at length and in depth, they should also practice writing concise and complete short answers.

I like short answer quizzes to help me get a better understanding of what they learned, and they can put it in their own words

plus it gives you a different way to evaluate learning.
