Grading
Long time needed when I have big class. I try to learn from experienced instructors.
That brings up an interesting questions: what is a timely manner?
I think a good rule should be: you never take more than a week to give graded work back.
If it goes beyond a week, the instructor appears to the class to be lazy.
...and they probably are!
I really like this idea -- I think that the students would really see more value from the exam as opposed to just "being tested". Thanks!
Im horrible about putting grades into the system as soon as I get them. I tend to write them down on template of the students and do it at midterm. I would like to start doing it as I get them. SO this is a goal that I'm setting for myself.
Mahmoud, That's a great approach. Having a dialog with a student while grading can also offer them a richer form of feedback when compared to giving them feedback on paper.

I tried once to grade the papers while the students with me.
I took each student aside and discuss his/ her paper and grade it at once. so easy
Michael, Sounds like you know yourself well. One approach is certainly to keep up on grading and invest more time getting it done. Another, of course, is to invest a little time in exploring time saving solutions for grading in the future. I might try to do a little of both approaches for benefits in the short and long term.

With all the other responsibalities we have I find I really need to dedicate time to keep up on my grading or I can dig a large hole for the end of the course cycle
Maggie, Yes, grading can be time consuming indeed. There are some things we can do to make it easier. You might consider automating things if you use multiple choice question formats. Similarly, ask students to underline or highlight the most important parts of their answers for essay questions.

Grading is the most time consuming. I would complete that first on my to do list.
Managing the time to grade is a big proble especially if you have large classes. You must make test out that are easy to grade. Never be to proud to ask for help when it comes to getting grades back to students in a timely manner.
