Knowing your limits

Hello Everyone:

We all must know our limits when we manage our time and get organized.
I have been teaching the same courses for a few years now so My notes are becoming dated or stale so I have been interjecting new material as the industry dictates. This helps keep me up on trends and helps to keep the student involved.

This is one of the easier ways of not only keeping you current with the most up to date information but keeping your students updated also.

I totally agree! When I find my notes becoming dated or stale so to speak, I know my students are most likely feeling it as well. I try to incorporate a small amount of new every quarter. This definitely assists in keeping students involved and engaged.

Kathryn, Yes, taking a step back to just breath and reflect can make us so much more effective when we do move forward.

I asgree with your comments there are times that we need to re-group our thoughts and actions to bring them up to date in order to improve on our teaching.

Ray, It sounds like you have done a wonderful job of assessing your success and determining what works for your students. It's so important to take a step back every now and then, as you have done, and reflect on what's working to make productive modifications in the future.

I try to do this myself. I teach technical moldmaking and casting in a school where all the previous classes were far less technical and more "art" and aesthetic based. Consequently, my class is much more "hard principle" and "fact" than they are accustomed to. Every week, I try to evaluate where I was successful and where I wasn't. Usually, I reach them better when I appeal to their visual senses instead of droning at the whiteboard. Physical aids and pictures are of great use.

I make sure to incorporate more on the things that confused previous students (I teach math and physics, so these are often intimidating to students).

I am finding this to be very helpful as well. It sometimes takes a reminder brought up in something like CEE classes.

I also utilize what I get from CE's and apply as needed to keep it fresh.
