causes of stress at work

How do you cope with the stress caused by a student who is always eating, even though I have asked him not to? He can not be trusted and is always lying about things that I have caught him doing.

This is an important point Scott. Explaining the why behind rules can often help motivate students to follow those rules.

In my class i have always stressed the importance of not eating by explaining how when someone eats in our room it can lead to bugs which then inturn leads to insecticides being sprayed at that point almost all of my student will realize it is not a good idea.

Eating in the culinary lab is way too inviting and unfortunatley it is a part of what we need to do. Unfortunatley it is frowned upon by the health inspector so I do my best to create an environment where students understand the difference between professionally tasting food to ensure it's quality, and eating. If students, or myself, were caught eating in the kitchen (lab)by the health inspector we would encur a critical voilation. I really stress the importance of not allowing yourself as a culinary professional to become de sensitized to health code regulations, even though ethically we must taste the food.

Great question Ernestina. I recommend making your no eating rule very clear in your course syllabus. I also recommend spelling out the consequences of breaking this rule in writing. This way you can more formally hold the student to the rule. If the student does not comply with your rule, lean on your normal channels of escalation do address the issue even more formally.
