Stress is basically defined as an applied force or system of forces that tends to strain or deform a body. It is usually caused by something that is out of the ordinary from everyday life, things like tests, family problems and loss of job. Today students have a lot of stress because of a lot of different reasons. There are many things that cause stress for college students; school-related issues, relationships, and peer pressure.
And appreciating the fact that the student may have multiple issues concurrently allows one to be appreciated for the both the display of knowledge as well as compassion
I have this same problem. It seems every term I have 3 or 4 students that are not prepared to be in my classes. I was teaching today and had to repeat the lesson steps over and over for a student, because she didn't know how to read a ruler, or her fractions. This stressed the whole class.
I have a handout for this, that I will bring in next week. Although I really don't feel this student should be in my class, and I am not looking forward to another 9 weeks of this. So now I am stressed.
I dont feel that todays students have any more stress than when I was in college. During my first year of college I saw many students that had to drop out because of many different reasons; not unlike the ones experienced by my students today. The big difference seems to be how they handle these problems. I dont believe that all people are able to handle stress the same for whatever reason. Until people learn to handle stress correctly there will always be those that become a victim of it. I do not believe that I am a model for a non-stressful life, but I think there are some simple things a person can do to avoid it:
-stay away from people that suck the life out of you.
-do not dwell on the problem; once you have identified the problem dwell on the solution.
-I know this may sound corny, but find a happy place where you can relax away from your stressors.
-become passionate about something that makes all those stressful things worth the trouble.
A real stress issue for me this quarter was
a mismatch of student abilities in particular
classes to activities required...Had to be a
little creative and plan alternatives to boost
these students' confidence and accomplishments.
It took much of the stress for this quarter on
"how" I was going to handle this situation off
me.
Lisa,
Most students are truly stressed out before they step into in the class. One way to reduce the stress is by getting to know the students through discussions and inquiry about their career goals and other interests

I have learned that everyone is stressed at some point, but we all handle it differently. THe biggest piece of advise that I find myself giving my students is to stop comparing thier issues/ life with each other. What may seen easy to you may be very stressful to someone else.
Very true Diane. It's tough when our students bring personal stress into the classroom. Maintaining an organized class and remaining calm when they articulate their challenges can be a huge help.
I agree that most of the students today have personal issues. This stress goes right into the classroom
It is overwhelming how student’s problems can create havoc on the teacher and fellow classmates. I do not have the “key” to ignore a student with chronic issues. I find this is a disruption to my teaching environment.
I agree and I amazed at how many of my students have families and work all day and then come to my class at night really wanting to work and learn I admire them and help them with some of their stressors
