Common Stressors

Stressors are really detrimental to sustained productivity. Some of the common factors that stress out faculty may include too much standards, that is, too many policies, changing policies, unrealistic deadlines, lack of freehand, excessive scrutiny, biased assessment and inability to appreciate faculty contribution. Other stressors may include students not showing up for discussion and expecting to make maximum points for concepts they do not fully understand.

Marlene, So true. Some meetings are pointless and waste everyone's time. Others do have real purpose. Being able to quickly assess the difference is an important skill.

Meetings and more meetings. Perhaps if we knew ahead of a meeting's 'recurring date' staff may be more receptive. I agree that some meetings are non-productive with no acomplishments.

Sounds like a lot of stress Doreen. One way to handle disorganized work meetings is to offer to be the meeting organizer. While it's a little up front work, you will likely find that meetings go a lot faster and more gets accomplished.

This has been my experience with poorly organized or planned meetings as well. Sometimes it seems that meetings are called just for the sake of meeting and have no real purpose with no accomplishments. How do we better explain the rationale and justification for meetings? How do we recognize the importance of time for each participant?

One of the stressors that bothers me at work is: Weekly meetings are never organized; there are typos within the material, the material presented did not haver teacher input and now all the work has to be re-typed and re-copied, peers mumbling and talking to their neighbors.

Student stressors when students do not return on time and i must repeat all the information. Also, students forget their laboratory equipment and are not prepared for laboratory.

I make sure to remind my students the day before and I also keep reminders on the board for scheduled lab times.

Thank you,\
Doreen G.
