A drastic life changing experience

Exactly one year ago yesterday, I moved my family from Colorado to California to take a job as an intructor at U.T.I. So not only was I in a completely new place, I had a totally new kind of job. Learning to adapt to life outside of the diesel industy and learning to teach students how to get into said industry put a lot of stress on not only myself, but my family as well. The process of adapting to my new home state has been much slower than adapting to my new role as instructor. living in California can be a stress inducer at times...

I agree Andre. For some reason when I am stressed in my personal life, I seem to thrive in my professional life; strange I know.

Seems like although I have much stress about getting everything completed for my classes/students, etc. A greater percentage of the stress that affects my personality, comes from my personal life, which I think is really interesting.

I feel like some stress and urgency is good for productivity, but too much can be deleterious for sure.

Andre, Sometimes it's a challenge to separate personal and work-related stress. Many instructors find that they carry stress between worlds, having a hard time separating the two. Sounds like you are an exception. You are one of the lucky ones in that way.

Personal stress can be a tremendous distraction to our professional lives. We need to manage this stress so it doesnt interfere with the quality of instruction we provide our students. I have been in my position for 8 years but recently went through TREMENDOUSLY stressful events at home. I try to put it aside when I instruct and I deal with the multitude of stresses at home (and they're "biggies" that I wouldnt have imagined ever going through in my lifetime). As stressful as instrucing a class can be though, I find a lot of joy in relating to the students, perhaps on their excitement/motivation alone.

Sure can be, even though it goes against the stereotype. I certainly empathize, as I am going through some major life changes as well, on top of considering a similar long distance move. Good luck!
