Being honest with yourself
I believe people too often overlook stress in their lives, they chock it up to "nature of the beast". I'm guilty of it too. This is when we need to be honest with ourselves, to acknowledge the stress, and then to identify the root causes. Sometimes it's easier to tolerate the stress, to just deal with it, but that is short-sighted. It would be to our greater good, and to the betterment of our students, if we make legitimate efforts to reduce the stress in our lives.
Agreed. Stress is too often just accepted as 'normal'. I've definitely realized the benefits of being honest about how much I can handle. This has helped me with me personally, as well as in the workplace. The next step for me was to utilize resources. At work, managing my emails, notes, lists, and communicating with my fellow instructors and management. At home, cutting out unnecessary troubles and including healthy, productive coping mechanisms has helped greatly. Plus, remembering to stop and smell the roses once in a while is never, ever a bad thing.
Identification of a problem, in this case stress is the first and most important thing to come to grips with to eliminate the problem.
I agree that being honest with yourself and others with no judgment is the first step in achieving balance.
I believe a lot of times we can have good intentions on what we think we can complete beyond our normal limits and with this thinking we get caught up and can sometimes be over whelmed. In which we stress ourselves beyond limits in completeing what we have agreed to.
I completely agree with your point. We need to be honest with ourselves when stress levels become to high. Talking it out can help find solutions or just relieve some of the pressure.
I must admit that after completing this module that I didn't really realize how personal and work stress interconnect. I often become sad with the lack of a proper social life and that does stress me out. I really need to find a new balance.
