Late arriving to class, leaving early. I can try to instill the value of being on time. For many students this is some what new for them. Future employers look close at their attendance. One thing I could say is they [ the employer ] would wonder if you the student will be reliable since you are spending alot to attend school and do not show up on time.
It is very clear that most students don't know how to effectively manage and prioritize their time. I have attempted to add structure to the class by providing a syllabus, task sheets, and a timeline for completion. These students are from the WIFM("What's in it for me")generation. If they don't see value in training and tasks they don't engage well in learning. I try to keep them informed on the importance of striving for goals and dreams in their lives and not always sweating the "small stuff" temporary financial and personal issues.
You bring up an important point Jason. We often tell students to study and expect them to know how. When they don't, they feel stressed and may be to shy to reach out. Giving students the techniques you described above is a great way to help them manage time and stress in their day.
The number one time management issues that I have found is studying. i find that the students do not really know how to study, and as such they do not effectively utilize study time and are unable to maximize their studying. I try to teach the students in SOP's to study using the SQ4R learning method. I tell them to Survey a page looking for highlighted text, underlined, text, bold text, paragraph headings, captions under charts or photos. I then tell them to make up Questions regarding those things that they have found. Then the Read the material, starting at the summary, then going to the introduction, and finally reading the body, and make sure that they can find those answers to the questions. Then I tell them to Relate the information to something that they already know. I then tell them to Recite the information in their own words. and those things that they cannot recite, that is what they need to Review. I find that this maximizes their studying and saves time.
Life is tough for our students Douglas. Many of them very much wish to be on time. They just can't find a way to make that happen. Encouraging some good habits, like leaving early, can help. Offering them a little flexibility now and then is another way too.
Our students often juggle school and work, causing them to be tired and often late. I encourage them to plan on leaving earlier so they aren't rushed.
Interesting approach Steve! A little structure is often welcomed by students.
i try to bring in a little military order i learned. 1. if you're on time you're late and satisfactory is not adquate. this works on many of the students but there are a few that pride theirselfs on being here just as the bell rings.
on the first day of each course I do a little time management talk. I suggest ways the student can achive complition of their assignments and how to set priorities that help them rather then hinder
This is true Timothy. it's important to focus our students on being productive with their lives.
Time management seems to be a big issue. I see students working hard at balancing school, work, and social life and social life for some trumps all and that’s where the get in trouble with attendance and studying. I try to council them about priorities and that if they can put some social stuff on the back burner for a while in the long run their life style will be better.
the main issue i see is them coming in late because they dont go to bed at a good time.so i tell them to save there parting for the weekends and get plenty of sleep so they can perform better at school and every day life too
Some students work, some students do not.some students do not know what to do with there life.I recommend to them to use the resources that they have- internet- to get information on anything that can help or interest them, to keep them from bordom.they will learn at the same time, instead of spending time on nothing of value.no comment
This is true Robin. Helping students prioritize is key!
The number one time management concern I see with students is them not seeing what is important in their life and arranging the schedule around that. They believe that their school is not as important as them going to a movie, so they do not do as good in their studies.
Sleep is so important Joseph. Encouraging students to get adequate sleep really can improve scores.
taking time to get enough sleep, they need to understand that they can't function ata a high level if they are tired affecting scores and class participation
Great to hear Errol. Yes, we've got to get our students prepared for the real world. When we don't help them address their issues early, they only continue to be impacted.
This is a good point Steve! Sometimes students get so wrapped up in their coursework that they can't see how things will eventually change and get better as they change semesters and ultimately graduate. Reminding them of that can be helpful.
Some of my students are working full time and also going to school 6 hours a day which will stress out even a well disciplined person. Simply lending an ear and allowing the student to express their situation can help relieve stress. Reminding them the present schedule is temporary and that the sacrifice will be well worth it helps keep them focused on their goals.
