De-Stress with an IPod
People at work often comment about how I listen to music while I work. What they don't realize is that listening to my IPod helps me de-stress and stay sane.
I second that Tracy. Music always helps me unwind however it is looked at as unprofessional at my workplace.
I've also found that listening to calming music when going to bed helps me to sleep well and wake up feeling relaxed the following day. I have a playlist on iTunes called "sleepytime" and it just has ambient movie scores and music like that.
Daniel, Sounds like you have had a life long, wonderful outlet to turn to. In that you were a musician, I wonder if playing music would also serve you well.

Being a musician before I was an instructor, listening to music almost always puts me into a different state of mind. Usually a much nicer state and it helps me to cope with my stressors.
Debra, Yes, as we find ways to reduce stress in our lives, we've got to consider the impact these methods have on others. Taste in music certainly varies from instructor to instructor. What helps you reduce stress may actually stress another instructor out!

It is good if we can use our IPOD with a headset so that we are not imposing on others with our musical choices. I know some people are really stressed by noises, as it mentioned in the lecture. I think I will try a headset! )

Very true Jeff. Music can be annoying and distracting when we don't like it. So finding popular artists and songs can really help when you are trying to relieve group stress.

As long as everybody agrees on the music, I find that it is a good stress releiver for all classmates.

I have an advantage because I work at recording arts program. I have access to soothing sound effects and instruments. My iPod has a few tracks hidden on it of just waterfalls and soothing piano melodies that I improvised. It works great to just listen to a few minutes of that to relax.

Music is huge for me! I love listening and it def allows me to relax!
I have worked in places where music has been blasting. It's a great motivator, especially when speed is crutial. It seems to keep spirits & productivity high. I wish I still worked in that type of atmosphere.
Great to hear you've found something that works so well Mike. Yes, when we find ways of properly managing stress, we are in a much better position to help others.
I find music actually helps me to relieve stress as well. Which in turn helps me to focus on my students needs.
That's tough Tracy. Sometimes positive coping mechanisms can be misinterpreted. It makes it hard when we have to justify things we really need to stay sane. Trying to explain your approach could help. Others could potentially benefit as well.
