I love the idea to use the text and lecture to create solutions to real-life problems your students are currrently facing. Helping them see the same problem from the two perspectives is a valuable technique, one that I will consciously try to incorporate into my classroom. Thanks for the tip!
I have my students implement the current material into hypothetical situations that they may run into in the real world at their job.
I challenge them to problem solve with problem employees and situations that I create....allowing them to use the text and lecture to create solutions that work in the job they tend to now....and the career they are going to school to do.
In this manner, I try to show them how the management and staff perceive each other. My students are now staff, they are going to school to become management. I allow them to see both sides of the equation, thus helping them to be better managers.
Hi Craig,
I like how you allow your students to run the class discussion to a certain point, but you step in when need be. Sudents like the leadership role that they partake with the class discussion, I'm sure.

Hi Nancy,
I like the use of paraphrasing from students. Paraphrasing from students helps me to determine if students fully understand the concepts taught.
Patricia
Hi Craig,
What do you feel comes with book learning and what comes with life learning?
Patricia
Hello Craig,
It is important to reach all type of learners. It appears you do a great job reaching various type of learners through the use of PowerPoint presentations.
Patricia
I use this method also to help them and to help me get some initial insight on each student. I ask them to introduce themselves and tell us anything they want us to know about them. I take notes while they are talking.
But I've learned from one of the other participants about using cards for them to fill out for me that are confidential. This will have info I need to know but maybe the rest of the class does not.
Hi Zbigniew,
According to studies, story telling tends to last with students. Any time we can use life experiences in the classroom we should.
Patricia
I think it is vital to get students interested in the Course Content. This is done by having an outline of the coure - and then add the student's suggestions/involvement to fill in some of the "gaps". Also paying close attention to the student's "WIIFM" - "what's in it for me" so we as instructors can better understand the interests of our students taking our courses.
Hi Dorenda,
It does help break the nervousness knowing that everyone will get to the hotplate. Each person has a turn.
Patricia
Hi Kim,
I am sure most students understand the relevance of knowing how to write in the workplace. You're right, there are those courses where you really have to make them see the importance in the workplace.
Patricia
Hi Santiago,
As educators, we are really big entertainers because we have to sell our students on coming back the next day. Positivity and animation are pluses in the education arena.
Patricia
Hello Novella,
I share positive and inspiring stories with my students about graduates. On the other hand, I also share those stories that are not so positive so that sudents get both good and bad.
Patricia
Hi Novella,
It is hard to imagine what life was like without PowerPoint. It is an awesome program. Instructors love it and students do too!
Patricia
Hi Susana,
Nicely responded to. Positivity, energy, and enthusiasm should start at the top with the instructor, and you're right it is a trickle down effect.
Patricia
Hi Elizabeth,
How exciting to have a real life example for each objective. I can see how students will get excited from this on the first day.
Patricia
I give them real life examples of when they will use the specific objectives listed in the syllabus.
If I'm excited about the subject and present myself in a professional but interested and fun way, the students respond better and are usually pretty positive about the material. They feed off of our energy more than we think!
My students love powerpoint presentations and especially the handouts with the spaces for them to add notes.
This is especially helpful for visual learners.
I share real life experiences of mine, recent and current students in the clinical setting and work force.
When I tell them how something a student has done recently impacted them negatively or positively , it really seems to interest them better than when it happened to me years ago.
They can relate better to current events.
Yet I still compare what's happening now to what has happened in the past to show them that the standards for success in the profession is still the same and is in compliance with what they are being taught.
