Hi John,
Dollar signs say it all. Students have an immediate interest if they know they can benefit monetary wise.
Patricia
Hi Eric,
Every course I teach I have a PowerPoint presentation that focuses on why it is important to master the course pertaining to a given field of study. The students fully understand the purpose of the course and how they will benefit.
Patricia
In the course I teach often times students come in with the attitude that they don't need to know the information presented in the course because they "won't need these skills in the area of the field they plan on working in". During class presentation I can often enlist their interest by pointing out the application of these basic skills and how they apply to the "bottom line" their future income and relate these skills to the specialized areas of industry they hope to find employment in. Pointing out that even if they find no need to apply the information that they will at least know the technoloy exsists should they need it for some reason in the future.
Show them thet they can make money from what they leran in this course.
Hi John,
I like the imagination. Generally, if students can see it or feel it, they get really excited and want to get involved.
Patricia
By letting the students know how the course will relate to the real world.
Hi C.C.
Students automatically become extremely interested when you talk about $$$$$!
Patricia
Hi William,
I like to tell my students late your "Haters" be your "Motivaters." Prove them wrong and make something of yourself.
Patricia
Hi Dennis,
This is so clever. It's amazing the positive feedback you get from students when you make them feel as though they have some say, and you really do listen.
Patricia
Hi Thomas,
Nicely said! You are so on point! I feel exactly as you do. I bet you are an awesome instructor!
Patricia
Hello Steve,
Continue to incorporate fun while learning, yet maintaining a controlled evironment. You have utilized a super mesh (fun/learning)!
Patricia
I find that relating the course to some personal experiences helps them connect the coarse to the jobs we are training them for. The students have a need to justification of the material. My job is to give them the information along with the practibility of that information through knowledge, clarity, and enthusiasm.
One of the ways is to have them imagine themselves working in there chossen field being successful, making money, and enjoying their careers. Then I inform them of the course requirements taht they will need to meet to achieve their goals of that dream career.
Explain to them what the advantages are to taking in as much of the course material and information as they can. Keep a constant emphasis on striving to do their best, not to be number 1 but just to do their best. I put my real life experiences and achievements out there for them to hear and see what can be achieved if they strive to do their best. To make what I give to them sound less boastful, I always explain to them that they can always achieve more that what I or anyone else has as long as they try their best and don't let others opinions of them hold them back.
Hi Sir Roy,
It always makes for an interesting subject matter whenever you can play the employer's card. Use the employer's card as often as possible.
Patricia
Hi Burke,
Students love real life situations; give them as often as possible.
Patricia
Hi James,
It is amazing how asking a good question can stimulate a lot of interest and discussion in the class.
Patricia
You tell them that they can make a very good living and to make that money here is what will be required of you. The people who are interested will respond.
I actually practice what I teach/instruct about. Which internal combustion engine performance. Being that I dragrace a motorcycle. I share with the students what lessons they learned in my course can be applied and I show them my dragrace motorcycle and what was done.
After my introduction of myself and the class and prior to the course syllabus presentation,I ask the students what they have heard about the class and we discuss any fears they may have .I ask them what they want to learn in this class.I usually put their ideas on the board. Now that I've gotten their attention,I pass out the syllabus.Since I've been doing this for years,I've been able to add the most commonly requested ideas to my curriculum already. Most students are pleasantly surprised to find they are going to learn something that they are personally interested in.They feel more involved because they had some say in what they are learning. My course requirements will now seem more logical to them and they now have more reason to attend the class.
