It is referring to their current level, however I do understand what you are saying about raising the bar. Whenever the bar is raised, students do generally reach the level.

When you say "match the abilities of the class" are you talking about their currnt level of ability or the level you are hoping for when they complete the task? I think if we tune our lessons toward their current abilities we are missing out. We need to set the bar higher and give them a target. Comfort is not our friend - learning takes place through pushing the edge a bit.

It is your class, therefore, you can set it up however you want as long as you are able to delivery effectively to your students.
