In all the classes I instruct, I make sure the students Know that the first day is the most important. I give a pop quiz on information I know that they have covered in other classes and after the students have completed the quiz, I let them know that the quiz is extra credit. This is accepted very well and my first day adendance is usuall the highest.

This first day is what I call a two-way street. The students get to learn about you, and you get to learn about the students. The "bar" should always be set so that the students can rise to it.

The first day is when you not only learn alot about the students that you have but they should also learn about you. You need to make sure that you set the "bar" where you want it and don't lower it or the students will be confused and may not meet your expectations.
