assignments

I leaned a lot of good information, assignments were a constant annoyance, I have a good understanding of how to handle this issue

Hi Kari,
Yes, it is! Students need assignments that they will benefit from--reinforcement based on what has been taught. Our students are way too busy to just have busy work, they really have a lot on their plate.
Patricia

I am a relatively new instructor and am unsure about quantity vs. quality of assignments I should give. It seems like giving too many "busywork-type" assignments turn some students off, however I think they can also get good content from them (like workbooks). Do you think giving fewer high quality assignments is a better way to go?

Hello Summer,
It sounds like you are more than available to your students. The student simply needs to show up and come to you. Keep being available to your students, I know the vast majority appreciate you!
Patricia

I couldn't agree more with this point. The first day I tell students that I am more than willing to meet before class, after class, during office hours, at a scheduled appointment to help them work through the class, especially if they are missing days or work. However, it is their responsiblility to come to me and I tell them directly--"I am not going to chase you down." To a class where a large percentage of students were late turning in their resumes, I had a long discussion about "I can't care more than you do about your work." The next round of papers were largely on time.

Hi David,
You should not have to chase a student down for their assignments. Don't do it! If they do not turn their assignments in, give them a zero. A supervisor will not chase an employee down to get their work from them. The employee will be reprimanded if he or she does not turn their work in by the deadline.
Patricia

I'm going to assume he ment late assignments were an annoyance. I can agree with you on this. It can be nerve racking when you are consistantly chasing a student down for their assignments.

Hello Robert,
Why have you determined that assignments were a constant annoyance? Assignments should act as reinforcement.
