Real World
You must make sure that the students understand that in the real work place, excuses for not having their assigned duties completed on time are not well received
Hi Joe,
You are definitely correct. Students school habits will certainly flow into the work place.
Patricia Scales
Students need to apply good work habits while in school, this will translate into the work. They need to understand in a business world excuses are met with a demotion or job lose. At that point in their lives they will have more responsibilities to consider, such as rent, mortgage, car payments etc.
Hi Robbi,
It is part of our responsibility to teach our students how to be professional. A lot of our students do not know how to act professionally.
Patricia Scales
I feel this dstinction is necessary. Otherwise, as you said it can come across as patronizing. It also puts emphasis on professionalism which is one of our main focuses in teaching these students to prepare them.
Hi Marcia,
Super response! In all of our Microsoft Office courses the tests are designed as to how they would be tested from a company.
Patricia
It's interesting that most of the "Real World" threads discuss late assignments, tardiness, etc. Your thread delves further and deals with with authentic assessment in the "real world." Authentic forms of assessment gained much acceptance in the mid 1990's and continues on through today. Teachers were challenged to provide methods of authentic assessment in their various classroom subjects, and it was much more difficult to do so in some than in others. I teach computer applications and computer graphics classes. It was very easy to assess based on performance in the skill area as opposed to paper and pencil tests. The most interesting aspect was in learning how other teachers used authentic measures of assessment. College students can benefit greatly from assessments that will mimic the type used in employee performance reviews in the "real world!"
I agree completely. We can do many things in and out of the classroom to help motivate and prepare, but ultimately it is the student that graduates and completes the course.
I try to make sure my students understand that the real world will not accept late assignments. I also use my past experience to expand on different skills such as how the particular skill has changed since the text was written or how different, newer technology is used instead of the equipment provided.
Hi Anne,
I let my students know it is a bear in the real world, and they must be prepared.
Patricia
I talk about getting along with coworkers. I also talk about the importance of getting to work timely and to think ahead for the possible issues that come up juggling family with work; especially for single parents.
Hi Jacalyn,
You are 100% correct. The real world simply does not care.
Patricia
Hi John,
I agree that it is our responsibility to help our students to be ready for the real world. I reinforce that the real world will not accept excuses for being late or absent. The real world expects us as adults to have a plan a,b and c to ensure that we will be to work and be on time. The real world does not care if your car is not working or if you kids are sick or if you do not have a babysitter.
Jacalyn
Hi Erin,
You're right. It is our job to help our students to become successful, but the student must forth the necessary effort.
Patricia
The role of an insturctor is to set our students up for sucess, and to suceed the need to understand there are consequences to our actions. Not having an order ready for a customeer when you said it would be ready for pick up = possible loss of customer and so on.
Hi Amy,
What type of concepts have you discussed so that students know that you are preparing them for the real world?
Patricia
I agree students need to know everything we do is to prepare them for the real world it isn't for us.
Amy
Hi Stanley,
Field trips are highly recommended. Students get to see first hand what they have been taught. I encourage field trips, get one setup.
Patricia
IT IS VERY HARD TO GIVE STUDENTS A REAL WORLD EXAMPLE IN AN UNREAL CLASS ROOM SETTING.SHARING PERSONAL EXPERIENCES IN PREVIOUS WORK SITUATIONS CAN GIVE STUDENTS A GLIMPSE INTO THE REAL WORLD.THE BEST WAY IS TO HAVE A FIELD TRIP TO A REAL WORK ENVIROMENT.
Hello Scott,
I do, I refer to the professional workplace quite a bit. The term professional workplace is more visual to the student, and they tend to understand it better.
