At the start of my classes, I stress to everyone they must always keep in mind the assignments due date deadline, and of the late points that can be assessed for late work, and finally I let them know that after a certain defined period, I am not obligated to accept any work beyond that day. Now, what I do though, is at the end of the course (I never tell them this), I do review their submitted work (if they submitted), but assess late points. I work under the philosophy, "I'm not doing this to fail anyone".

Hi Jviveros,
What are your thoughts about sick days that you can get paid for at work?
Patricia

I also use lab sheets for my class, on the first day of class i tell my students, that if you miss a day in lab you will not be able to make it up,no work no pay.

Hello Rod,
It is always good to put things in writing. What are lab packs?
Patricia

The classes that I teach use lab packs in addition to hands on Lab time. There are 3 Lab packs and are due at a certain time. I make certain that the students are aware in writing and verbally that a lab pack is worth 50% if turned in late. I will allow them to turn it in early if done or have one of the team members turn it in for them.

Hi Michelle,
No, not too harsh. You are preparing them for the real world. You are good to your students by offering your free of charge services. As educators we must be realistic.
