I proved in my graduate thesis that students learn with less effort if they are relaxed and not afraid to fail, sharing life experiences with classmates will motivate the class to open discussion and allowing all of them for that brief amount of time to buy into one of your learning objectives of the day
Hi Rebecca,
Anytime you can use a visual to add clarity, do so. Students get it better when they can see it.

Use tangible examples of successful skills application as well as visual aids to increase the students awareness of how the course can allow them to achieve their career goals.
Hi Nicolas,
Learning needs to be applied to the real world. Students understand the benefit of the course better when they know how the course is going to help them in their career.

Hi Betsy,
When real-life application is introduced to students, they will buy in because they understand the benefit of the course.

In order to gain buy in from my students I bring the real life application of the theories into classroom activities and learning modules. This helps them understand the benefit of fully grasping the concepts we're working on.
I prefer to anchor the class in the real world: by showing that every aspect of the class is relevant to their future employment. Whether it's the knowledge acquired, the skills used or the class interactions, all of it can be pertinent to the workplace.
At the same time, that's one of the hardest things to convey to a student who's never worked in the field, which is why I try to support my point with personal stories from my own career path, or examples from the lives of well-known people in our field.
Hi Samuel,
Yes, we have to reassure our students that education is priceless. The investment in education is certainly well worth it.

Keeping the carrot dangled is vitally important. Especially when your in the middle of a program that last a given period of time and they are stressed out about all the exams they have finals week.
Also reminding them that the investment they are making in themselves will payoff.
Hi Luis,
Great approach, lecture and then let the students apply what they have learned through lecture.

Being a HVAC instructor I will lecture on a specific subject. I will then take the class into the lab where the students will get an opportunity to see a theory at work. Using hands on skills to properly replace or repair the component.
Hi Cathy,
I come up with a list of inservices by getting ideas from my instructors. We have guest speakers to present on various topics, such as Retention, CPR, United Way, Domestic Violence, Laughter in the Workplace, etc.

Hi MARIANE,
Students enjoy hearing our stories as to how they apply to the course content and the real world.
Patricia Scales
Hi April,
Students need to and want to know how the course is going to help them professonally. You gain buy in once the students learn how they are going to benefit from the course.

Hi Paula,
Yes, this is a sure statement to grab their attention. Everyone wants a good job so that they can provide for their family.

Thank you. Please send me updates on how to access inservices. Cathy Claveria Rn MSN Nursing Instructor

One strategy to get buy in from the students is to give very concrete, clear examples of how the content will be used in their future career. In clinical experience, this is very effective, especially of the instructor uses real life occurrences to demonstrate both negative and positive examples in the workplace.
I would address the class and discuss the course highlights and how it applies to their field of interest. Next I would provide examples and demonstrate in discussion examples of how the course will assist the students in their field of studey. I would then ask the class questions regarding their field of study and request examples of any similar experiences that may relate to the course. I always thank them for their participation while having the open discussion. Using their feedback helps me to learn the level of experiences and assists with guidance and expectations of the course. I find it engages the students to learn of others experiences and opens the doors for discussion.
Inform students of the end results; getting a good job and being able to provide for their families.
To get course buy in from my students I follow a few steps. First, I include life examples about how the objective or topic we are currently on relates to the "real world". I include students in this discussion and have them give examples they have come across or situations they have encountered. Second, I use positive feedback when students respond to questions posed. Instead of telling them "You are wrong" I will say something like, that's a great answer but lets think about how it relates to the question, does it fit?. Lastly, I ensure I am excited about the topic I am talking about and have fun with it so they are able to see that and react to it.
