I like to show relevancy of course content material by tying the students future aspirations to the content material. As a consequence, I offer students the opportunity to use their goals to strengthen their understanding of the content material at hand. Research concludes that students are more inclined to engage in content material when a personal component is added to the curricula. Therefore, through lectures, group work assignments, presentations, and research projects the students develop a stronger grasp of the course content, as well as, the globalized economy.
Hi Bianca,
Students like to hear about what happens in the real world so that they know what to expect and, they are better prepared.

I love to offer real life examples to my students as a means of association. It has been proven to create permanent information in their minds and keeps them engaged at the same time.
Hi Frank,
I have found that students love to hear things as to the way they are in the real world so that they know more of what to expect.

I enjoy using real world job relevancy issues with my students. If I can get them to buy in on some of my experience that I bring? The better they can see the content of the course as necessary.
I show them the relevancy of a course by doing real life labs, to see the knowledge that they have learned.
Hi Salvatore,
Students need to fully understand what they are going to gain from the course and how that information is going to help them professionally/personally.
Patricia Scales
I try and constantly relate subject matter to real world situations. At this stage in my students education they want to know that what they are learning has direct correlations to what they will need upon graduation.
I teach in a Sonography program, and we use the lab on a daily basis to solidify the concepts and information that is presented in the course. Also, real life examples gained from working in the field it's always a great way to show students the importance of the instructional material.
The biggest question I get from students is "Why do I need to take this course?" The way that I show relevancy is to explain how this information will be used by the student every day on the job. I give example of when it would be appropriate to know and to understand this material before they need it on the job.
Hi Ronald,
Students really do love hearing about our stories/experiences as they apply to course content and the real world.
Patricia Scales
I Feel that students enjoy discussions that involve real-world situations.
Use an ice breaker that shows the importance - I teach computers. We are doing a unit on training. I used the paper airplane ice breaker - 1st just make a plane - 2nd research and make a plane - 3rd best plane maker train how to make a plane. Discuss how training and direction produced a better plane
SHow them examples of how the course taught will be relevant in their field of study.
Being a teacher at a Technical School really makes it easy for me to be able to relate the subject matter to the career that many of the students will be stepping into. It is much easier to show relevancy in the course material when all of the students are focused solely on one goal, which is to become certified in a specific field. Many of the students come from different backgrounds however, and I try to relate some of the course material to situation where they may have been able to use the material being taught in their previous careers or in their personal life.
The course I teach is outside the main focus of my students. It is essential I help them see the value in the material we are covering. I have created assignments that connect the material to their main career focus, and have also created in-class discussions that help the students directly engage in dialogue that explores the real-world application of the in-class material.
Hi Todd,
Students want to and need to know how the book theory relates to the real world.
Patricia Scales
I completely agree! Using the class content in an example applicable to tasks the student will face ties the book learnin' to the actual functioni.
By explaining the information and providing examples of the relationship and applications to the work world.
Demonstrate to the students in the lab just how long it would take for a (do-over), if they missed one intregal part. In this case, an engine assembly.
