handling late or missed assigments

if Syllabus states that a late assignment will be accepted up to one week , each day the assignment is late there will be a 20% deductions of points. my question is ? what if the student have a problem with the lenguage acomplishing the assignment?

Hi Santos,
You are very undertanding. I do make exceptions, but only in extenuating situations, such as death, hospitalization, accident, etc.
Patricia

Yes, we need to stick to the plan but I always believe that everybody deserve a second chance.Whatever the student's excuses, wether it is technology, language or other issues, I do believe that as an instructor we should also be reasonable and accomodating.

I explain to my students if they are having a problem they need to come to me before the assignment is due. If it is a math class and there is a small assignment everyday I tell them to try and put thier best answer and ask me to help them after class.

When a class is only 3 weeks long and there are 3 assignments, each one due on a Friday, there is no room for late assignments. I clearly state on day one when reviewing the syllabus and course requirements that the homework is due on the date stated on the syllabus. That homework can be turned in early but never late.

I also/then explain to my students that their quizzes are on each Friday of their term. So by doing their homework each week, it helps them to review for their tests.

Of course I make allowences for extrordinary circumstances, but I explain that it is the students responsibility to call or email their reasons before not after the homework is due.

I think having a tutor help a student is a good idea. What I do not agree on is when some instructors suggest, having a policy of late work equals 0 points; this is too harsh because I believe students need to learn the value of doing homework.

Hi Patricio,
The student should ask for help, and help would be provided.

Hi Patricio,
Great idea! We have a paid tutor on staff, but we still get late/missed assignments. Some students just will not do what they are suppose to, but we have to continue to help them work toward their success.
Patricia

How about if we use another resource to assure and avoid late or missed assignments(like having a tutor available at school?)that can work on the problem with the student and to insure the student's success.
