first day of class

first day of class I first introduce myself, let students know who i am where i come from,my credentials. then i go into what the class is about. first i talk about the projects and how they are graded on them. then i talk about class patricipation and how they are graded on that. quizzes then attendance and i stress on the attendance because like in the real world you have to be an employee that is there in order to get paid. i also set the stage for how class is run and what kind of respect i expect if they want respect in return. i find being strait up with the students and not sugarcoating anything goes alot farther than leaving any grey areas and having to re explain the rules and guidelines for class

Hi Sarah,
I have seen that a quiz that is not allowed to be made up or have points deducted for being taken late generally encourages students to attend class. Quizzes/tests can serve as great retention tools.

We are not allowed to grade for attendance but instead emphasize to students what they may be missing if they are absent, and that we reserve the freedom to give a quiz at any time.

I always give them practical examples as well, expecting that students will treat class like it is their job. As they all would like to be successful in their future career, their employer would have expectations of them to be on time and prepared for work, as well as meet deadlines, etc.

Hi Jacqueline,
Thank you for mentioning the importance of attendance on the first day. Students need to realize that it is a very high correlation between receiving good grades and having good attendance. Good attendance is regarding as impeccable work ethic in the work place.

On the first day of class I do the same. Class introduction, go over class syllabus, calendar, rules and regulations. Quizzes and testgrading is explained and also the importance of perfect attendance. I have each student stand and introduce themselves and tell why they chose this course.I think if this is done on the first day it sets the tone for the class.

Your first class presentation mirrors what I set out to accomplish on the first day. Most important is to clarify why and what will happen during the course. Second, the purpose of the first meeting is to establish a comfortable teacher-student environment. Also, creating effective work teams is necessary.

I feel that it is very important to set the pace on the first day of class. What are your standards going to be through out the time spent in the class room
