cheating

What do you do when a student cheated and lied to your face and to your department chair too?

If I can confirm that the student cheated, I would immediately talk to the student in private. I would not publicly humiliate the student (privacy)to allow them to save face, but inquire what was their goal with respect to the behavior or act and clearly state the expectations of the class as well as the consequences for their actions and what the next steps will be for them.

I would ask the student what was his/her reasoning and to mention they are only hurting themselves.

Hi Terence,
I have not used this approach. I am not very big on take home tests. You never know who is doing the test when the test is taken home. Thanks for sharing the website.
Patricia

What about using take home tests instead? Has anyone tried this approach?

Weber, L.J., McBee, J.K., & Krebs, J.E. Take home tests: An experimental study. Retrieved by http://www.springerlink.com/content/h7221t330523208r/

When a student is caught cheating it is usually on a test.I have had students put answers into their cell phones. I witnessed this and after the test was done, I asked to see the student and her cell phone. I discussed what I witnessed with the student with the PD and asked for the students feedback. The student was given a zero on her exam and made aware that she would be expelled if it happened again.

Hi Karen,
Great explanation! I also explain to my students that cheating is turning in someone else's work as if it isyour own. If you copy someone's work and turn it in as your own, then that is considered cheating. They tend to get it based on the explanation.
Patricia

I have students that have told me that they don't understand why they can't work together. I need to explain to them that guiding someone to the correct answer is not the same as copying or writing the same answer as someone else.

Generally I haven't really been exposed to such a major issue. But I would ask for proof of what he/she sustains. all students are allowed to express themselves but they need to prove what they say.
In case of cheating, I warn them all in the first day of class that cheating is not acceptable and that consequences will be not points allocation. If a student continues with the same attitute, the school's management will take more drastic decisions.

Hi Tiffany
Had the same experience with a student he also was given a second chance which he appreciated.

Hi Tiffany,
More than fair! The student should have appreciated a second opportunity.
Patricia

I thought it was all handled very well. She received a zero on the exam, and had a discussion with myself and the Dean of Students. She was given a warning also. I told her that she needs to continue working hard in the class, and that she is high alert with myself and the college. If she is caught cheating in my class or any others, she will be expelled from the school.

Hi Tiffany,
Concrete evidence is everything whenever you state a student has cheated. How was the student penalized?
Patricia

Wow...this is too familiar!!! I just had a student cheat. I was very concrete with my evidence and stated exact quotes!! My director and dean both trust me and it was helpful to let them now immediately after the event!!!!

Thank you guys for the information on the sites. It will come very handy in the future

Hi Vicki,
TurnItIn.com is a popular site. You may need to google it to make sure I have it cased correctly, and also google will give you various websites for plagiarism.
Patricia

Hi Nan,
What do you do to make the students mindful of p1agarism?
Patricia

We subscript to TurnItIn.com

Can anyone recommend websites for checking papers for plagiarism?

If you actually witnessed the cheating there is nothing to discuss. You witnessed it therefore it happened and there is no discussion for it. There is no excuse for cheating.
