Tutoring
I find that tutoring is an excellent way to help students succeed in college. In nursing programs, for instance, the traditional classroom lecture is oftentimes so voluminous and complex that students may feel overwhelmed and unable to focus. This has led me to offer tutoring to students who did not comprehend the material in class. The students are happy when their questions are answered and concepts are explained to them at a pace they can manage.
I think peer tutoring is very helpful. Students will open up more to other students and they just feel more comfortable. My high achievers love helping others.
Hi Winnifred,
One-on-one tutoring is extremely helpfuly, some students need indvidualized attention.
Patricia
I think that by tutoring a student that is weak in their subject area, this will give them some strenght and leverage towards accomplishing their goals and passing their exams.
I have been tutoring my math students in small groups and I am amazed at how much some of them miss during class discussion and/or lecture. In a tutoring session they can revisit an area and have an apportunity to really learn it. I am a firm believer that we all learn through different "channels".
Gilbert,
Tutoring definitely is important, to not only those with comprehension issues, but also to those who look to further their understanding and excel in their courses.
Though I agree with "peer" tutoring, I am not sure it completely encompasses my point I stated above.
Tutoring by us, means a deeper understanding of important topics, and having the ability to explain further the application of the learning objectives in the real world.
I applaud your commitment to your students.
