Course Requirements

Should an instructor give thier grading rubric to a student so they can write to the rubric?

Hi Danny,
Rubrics are definitely a way to reduce complaints/concerns from grading. The students can really get a solid idea as to what kind of grade they will get on the assignment because everything is indicated in the rubric.

Hello Everyone, I definitely agree with the usage of the grading rubric. We have incorporated it now in the syllabus, and have a blown up scale posted on the wall in each of our classrooms. We discuss it thoroughly the first day of each course. I believe that it helps with student accountability so there is no missunderstanding of how each assignment is graded and how much each core subject is weighted against the entire course grade.

Hi Justine,
My experience with rubrics is that students love them. With a rubric for a particular assignment, there are no surprises.

I agree that rubrics work well. I've had students comment that they appreciate knowing what the expectations of the paper are ahead of time. They have also told me that they have been frustrated in other classes that do not provide rubrics, since they do not understand how they ended up with a particular grade. Just like the syllabus provides expectations of the student for the term, the assignment rubric presents expectations for that particular part of the course.

Hi Stephen,
I don't see it as a hidden agenda. Students can pregrade their work before the instructor actually grades it. I think it is a great idea.
