Field Trips
Field trips are always a good idea has they give students a real perspective of their future career s
Hi Angela,
Students love field trips. Field trips really bring classroom theory into perspective.

To reinforce learning and to add new insight to the students' carreer choices, field trips can make the learning feel real and stimulate more interest and commitment to a course.
This is generally the case, however, some field trips require additional time or may be to good to pass up. An example is an upcoming participation with the Parish Emergency Preparedness unit. The exercise occurs on the first day of the next quarter and some CJ students may be assigned to classes other than CJ. This exercise is an annual event by invitation only, and our CJ students have been invited.
Hi Riley,
At my institution field trips are only allowed during the alloted time of the class. Instructors are not allowed to interefere with another instructor's instructional time due to field trips.

I have and will continue to provide field trips for my students. This is a motivational tool as well as a real world look at the practical application of the classroom work. When I encounter negative feedback from other instructors concerning students missing their classes I explain to them how important the field trip experience can be.
Not that I'm aware of. Our school welcomes them, but the downside is the time constraint. Many students have 2 or 3 classes in a day and a field trip disrupts their ability to be in all the classes. Sometimes it can't be helped, but other instructors don't look kindly upon having their students miss a class.
Hi Chuck,
Field trips are a great support of classroom theory. Are there really educational institutions that frown upon field trips?
Patricia
I agree and wish more programs supported the use of these. They're especially important for real-world learning examples.
Field trips expose the student to the equipment and the type of work they may be preforming when they enter the field.
I think that field trips are an excellent idea as it gives the students an opportunity to see the skills and didactics they have learned being used in the workforce. This enables the students to have a better understanding of why skills need to be performed accurately. In addition, field trips also give the students an idea of where they would like to seek employment after graduation. Many facilities that we visit will ask students for their resumes and see them as prospective employees.
Hi Sarah,
I totally agree! An assignment needs to be given an followed up on so that students understand the importance. Students need to know that the feel trip is not just a day to miss from school, but is a meaningful part of the course.
Patricia
Hi Charles,
Yes they do. I always tell my students now you can see theory in action. I like to give my students an assignment to complete pertaining to the field trip so that they can fully understand, it is a great learning experience.
Patricia
The field trips need to have objectives and guidance to focus the students and make them realize that they need to be paying attention and gleen information before the tour starts. There needs to be some type of assignment after the trip to reenforce the information learned.
