Requierments for the success of a class.

INTERESTED STUDENTS AND A MOTIVATED INSTRUCTOR?

Hi Jennifer,
Try the same tactics you use with other students to get things student excited and interested. Let the student know that they can have a very fruitful life being a dental assistant. Share interesting articles/stories with this student. Have this student do their own research in the area, and the two of you discuss the findings.

I find it interesting that students end up in my class that seem DISinterested. For instance, one student originally planned on going into Pharm Tech, but didn't pass the background check, so then went to Medical Billing and Coding, but again background check. She just ended up in Dental Assisting because we don't require a background check...how do I get this student engaged?

Hi Michael,
What a great response. It sounds like you do a fine job esuring that your classroom environment is conducive for learning.

As an instructional staff person I feel that it is important to create an effective classroom climate the first day. This means that we set the tone for what will happen in the class. The classroom climate will affect what is said or not said, what is learned and not learned and how we feel about ourselves. I want to create a classroom climate that is inviting, psychologically safe, and personally and intellectually stimulating. To accomplish this task the climate needs to be fostered by openness, involvement, respect, and a sense of community.
On open climate is one in which we all feel safe to be honest and that our ideas, feelings, and questions are valued.
Involvement exists when we are personally engaged with the material and each other and when the engagement includes constructive participation in the class; this includes involvement not only with the instructor but with other students as well.
It is important to respect diversity of ideas, experiences, values and communication styles. Respect what others say as well as their right to say it.
Finally, a sense of community will exist when we as a group are collectively engaged in learning, exploring, and enriching our understandings of communicationa and human action through knowing and involving ourselves with other students both in and outside of the classroom setting.
