Creating first day excitement

After working in IT management for 12 years before starting to teach, I feel as though I bring something special to my IT students. The first day, I discuss various job opportunities and discuss the skills needed for each one. I even go into what companies in my area are currently hiring certain positions and discuss salary and the working conditions.

I realize that a very small percentage of my students will pursue IT for their careers, but I do find that everyone gets excited when they hear about various jobs that are explained by an actual hiring manager.

Hi Wendy,
Great response! Students need to see your excitement about the course so that your excitment becomes contagious, and they catch the excitement too. Excitement starts at the top with the instructor.

I think this is an important topic, the first day is a first impression, for the instructor and for the course and program you are teaching.

You want to get these students excited about their new career and excited about being in the classroom. Make it worth their while.

Hi Dennis,
I go in with a boat load of enthusiasm, and make it known how they will benefit professionally from the course.

What a great idea,in my class we spend some time just to get to know one another, and find out what are there long term plans once they graduate. We also ask what they expect to get from my class in the 3 short weeks we have togather (my class is only a small part of the total classes they attend). However I have not asked if the class met all of their expectations. This is something I will add to my class from now own.

I often have my students fill out a personal/professional inventory on the first day. I have them write about life as it is now and, write about what changes they expect to see after they complete training. I pull them out at the end of the curriculum and have them read what they wrote at the start of their journey!!! They are always amazed at how much they accomplished!

Hi Cecilia,
You may want to start with the Better Business to determine how to close down illegal practices.

After working 15 years in my field of massage I feel great that more opportunites are available in health care facilities. Massage therapy has has a reputation of being recreational and most clients would only receive a massage for a beauty or relaxation treatment. Massage Therapy today focuses on alleviating pain and discomfort associated with a pathology or a medical diagnosis. My students are so excited to learn that they are able to bill medical insurance. The massage industry is evolving to great new heights. My question is: How do we close down illegal practices so the legitimate ones could thrive?
