I have found that collectively making paper airplanes as a group. And have sutudents restructure the planes to fly better, enhancing team work and becoming familiar with fellow students.

I teach criminal justice, so I like to start the classes with a case study, and have the students decide the outcome of the case, and then we discuss their solutions.

In the past I have used an exercise where the students must pick one of three items, Favorite color, TV show, Movie, etc. and team up with classmated that picked the same item. This helps build common ground. Get them to talk about why they picked this particular item.

One I did recently was to introduce ourselves and tell each other what actor would portray us if they made a movie about our life.

Hi Danni,
Have the students make a list as to what they expect to get out of the course. I pair my students and have them interview each other and then introduce the person to the class. I partner with a student if possible, otherwise I introduce myself.

Ask each student to pick an animal whose name begins with the same letter as theirs and say it out loud with their name and stand up. "Mackeral Mark"
