Syllabus

This was very a informational segment of the course. The importance of being prepared for class on day one is a maker or breaker. At our school we strive to make sure all instructors are prepared and ready to distribute syllabus on day one of class.

Yes ,this is awesome ,the syllabus is the backbone the course,it instructs the Instrusctor to get the Objective and be more specific

I agree with you. I learned a lot.

Hi David,
The syllabus is certainly your guide. It is the best to refer to. Students have no excuses when everything is outlined in the syllabus.
Patricia

On the first day I let my students know that the course is guided by the syllabus. In my syllabus, I outline all days of practicals, and dates all projects are due. I let them know that no late work is accepted and remind them of this several times during the course. I have found that having everything outlined in the syllabus lets the students know the expectations required to pass the class.

I don't think students will read the syllabus if it is left up to them to read on their own time. But if the syllabus is discussed in class with the question and answers, I think students will understand and abide by it.

I agree. Students need to know what is expected of them and have goals to reach. If they know what they have to achieve to meet their training objective, they generally will work hard to reach those goals. It is hard to hold them accountable if their objectives are not clear cut and they know how to successfully complete the course.

They syllabus should be a guide for them to follow throughout the course and know how they are progressing along the way.

Having a proper syllabus will also allow student to follow the course and not fall back on the excuse of "I didn't know when this was due".

Hi Zafar,
Students will look through it. But, do you feel students will read it? If they do read it, will they read it with understanding? I make it a point to thoroughly explain the syllabus. I also have a question/answer session as well.
Patricia

Course Goals, objective topics and policies are important to set them in a way that they high light key information around the text. If it is attractive students will look through it.

Hi Joshua,
You should cover ALL rules, policies, procedures etc. on Day 1.
Patricia

I can now further understand the importance of outlining the ways in which the students will obtain the subject matter on the first class meeting. The ways that there work will be graded and also the expectations of late or missing assignments.

The Syllabus is the contract between you and your students. Just like the work environment, it will let them know what is expected and at what time. Policys to follow and how to act.

consistency and structure are very important, providing syllabus at beginning of first day of class sets the standard

The syllabus the the backbone of the course. It gives the studnet a guide of what is expected from the class. I always include as the last page, a signature page, this serves to verify that the student has read and understands what is expected.
