I absolutly agree,as an instructor now I have found that late assignments cause students to become somewhat lazy and in field I came from
these habits will cost them money, time and possibly a job.

I agree. I think that as instructors we have to help set the standard that is enforced in the work environment. At work, we don't get the opportunity to pick and choose when we will submit our work and by who's deadline. I feel that we are doing an injustice to our students if we allow them to turn in work late, without penalties.

Isn't our job to prepare them to enter into a career and meet the expectations of employers?

To do that, we have to set deadlines, abide by them, and assist our students in meeting these standards that will be expected of them.

I allow my students to have one late assignment without penalty. Then I have a progressive scale ranging from 5 points for being late 1 day to 20 points for 7 days. They must let me know in advance if their assignment is going to be late; otherwise, they receive a "0". I am surprised by the number of F's I give at the end of the term.

I totally agree. I am regularly frustrated with students that think it is okay to turn in assignments days late. I take points off each day it is late and make it clear that I will be doing so at the beginning of class but that doesn't seem to spur on a sense of urgency.
