effective teaching
What suggestions would you give for a new employee/instructor who has not taught prio to this job?
I would have them stick to the syllabus, reach out to other instructors in the field, and also suggest that they attend conferences, meetings to build their knowledge base and confidence.
How do you get feedback from an experienced instructor? Just by bouncing questions off him/her? Do you have them observe your classroom?
We'll have observation week coming up at our school. I welcome that opportunity to have someone take a look at what I'm doing, and give me feedback.
We also have an informal opportunity for students to provide feedback during the first few weeks of the course.
When I first began teaching at a university I would get feedback for an experienced instructor every chance I could. It was always insightful.
The new instructor should be as knowledgable as possible in the subject matter being taught. However, he or she should also not be afraid to say "I don't know, but I will find out for you." Never try to dance your way through an issue. You will be a better instructor each time you have to dig something out because you will remember it.
Hi Joyce,
Take as many educational courses as possible. Pick a seasoned instructor's brain every opportunity that presents itself.

I would encourage them to stay close to the syllabus and requirements for the class. These are very effective tools and make sure the student is learning the information to be taught. Also, give concrete examples of a particular point to help it relate to the student.
