YOU ARE TRAINING TO BE EMPLOYABLE

Encourage students to perform as though their class was the new job they were wishing for.

I agree completely. I teach my students that I can't teach them if they aren't in class so there for they miss the information for that day and what if that information is the key component & function in there office.

Hi Patricia, I agree with all previous posts. It is imperative that we do not set our students up for failure by being too lenient when it comes to compliance on rules and regulations. We must role model the type of behaviors and expectations that our students will be faced with in the real world. Chronic tardies, turning in assignments late, and non-compliance of policies will not be tollerated in the work force.

Hi David,
Great response! Our students are truly professionals in trading, and we want to teach them to have exemplary work habits.
Patricia

Education is training and the way you train is the way you perform. Its essential to stress to the students that not only should assignments be on time but also to put forth the effort not just to get it done but to do it to the best of their ability and do it right. If they practice this now it will undoubtedly carry through into their employment leading them to be successful in their career.

Hi Cindy,
I like the way you break this down to your students. They get to see things from a whole different light. It makes more sense to students whenever instructors make various scenarios applicable to the real world.
Patricia

Hi Justin,
I hear you loud and clear! Appearance says a lot about you. Our students must realize that they are being watched and there is a time and place for everything. At my institution we send students home that are out of the dress code.
Patricia

I love hearing this! I tell my students that they are now employed and I am treating them as if they are. My class is their job and they are paying for it instead of being paid.

I believe it's not only the professional appearance of their assignments, but their personal appearance as well.
Our student handbook clearly dictates a dress code, yet we have a large population of the student body who believe the code does not apply to them. This being said, when I have a student sitting in class with bright pink hair or earrings the size of hula hoops, I literally show them a mirror and ask them if they were the boss, would they hire the person in the mirror?
Most students who are serious about their education realize that this is preparation for their chosen careers and act as such, the others I try to remind that we have prospective employers visit the campus regularly and that pink hair is very memorable but not likely to get you hired.

Hi Byron,
Everything we teach our students should be from the perspective of employment/job related.
Patricia

I agree! I explain to them the importance of the knowledge they will learn in my course and how this will benifit them in the work world. I then tell them that having many years experience as a manager in the industry they are wishing to enter once they finish school, I will give them feedback as a manager and an Instructor. I believe that this helps them to see why I feel it is so important to learn and practice good skills now.

Hi Joseph,
Great point! I do the same thing. I always make things apply to the work world. Would you give this to your boss?
Patricia

I encourage students to take pride in their work products. An example of this is when my students turn in their math assignments, I won't accept jagged edge paper. I ask the students whether they would give their work in such condition to their boss.
