late assignment

what would be the next option when there is already a classroom calender with due dates of exams and assignment and after reminding students about the due date still not presenting the work?
any suggestions?
I am open.
thank you

I give weekly quizzes at the beginning of each class. The quiz is adapted from the previous week's homework. The students know that if they want a good grade on the quiz they should do the homework as a way to study for the quiz.

Hi Richard,
Absolutely, the ground rules must be shared and clarified on Day 1. Students will abuse the system if they are allowed to do so.

Our student s also have time lines to complete Labs and projects.
Make it a clear understanding from day one that partial credit is given for work turned in late

Hi Paul,
I am guessing this is one free missed exam per grading period. Do you have a lot of students taking advantage of the free missed exams? I like your policy on quizzes. At my institution, students receive a 10-point deduction for missing an exam, and if they exam is not taken over the next three days, they receive a 5-point deduction for each day, and after the fourth day they receive a zero.
Patricia

Wow that really is strict. Ours is one free missed exam, 20% off after that. Quizzes are always a zero and cannot be made up.

Hi David,
Strict policy, and I like it! In the real world it is not easy, and students need to know this up front.

We continually emphasize the importance of teamwork and the need to do your part. A late assignment sends the the message to the student, as well as others in the class, that actions, or inactions, have consequences. In my classes 50% off for first day missed, after that zero.

My particular situation this is completely taken out of my hands. I must provide the students with the deadline and ensure that they understand it, however there is no opportunity for a student who has missed a deadline to submit their work. If it is late it is a zero. As a result I rarely if ever have a student who is late to turn in an assignment.

Hi Tonia,
Come up with some type of penalty. I give 0's if a project is late. I am more lenient for assignments, I deduct 10 points. Students need to understand the importance of deadlines.
Patricia

All of my assignments are listed on the syllabus with due dates. My students have until the beginning of class to submit their homework. If it is not submitted at that time they can turn it in anytime after that for 1/2 credit. It's a really simple way for me to keep track and they can still earn some credit.
