Once the syllabus has been fully explained and they have attested by signing they fully understand everything at that point, the student should be held accountable. Students must learn how to accept accountability.

I spend over an hour explaining the syllabus to its most infinite detail, even to the point of having a back page they must sign and return to me saying that they have read and do understand the syllabus. But within a couple of weeks into the class, I find myself being asked questions relating to the syllabus. At what point is the student responsible for his/her own success in the class?

It is vitally important for the students to fully understand the syllabus. All expectations should be shared on Day 1 so that students are not in for any surprises.
