turning in homework late

Do you give them full credit when they are absent and they bring a slip from like the doctor or court?

Students are notified in advanced about class assignments and homework. Students know when their work will be due, therefore they should turn in all work on time. Unless an extreme emergency was to occur and is unavoidable, then the student must bring in documentation to show that they have an official excuse. If students have appointments scheduled on a day an assignment is due, they must turn in assignments/homework a day/days prior to its due date.

I like to give them the opportunity to turn it in early if they know that they have a court date and will be out the day homework is due. On the other hand, if they are going to the doctor, that might not be planned, however, they know our building is open from 8am to 10pm and should try to make arrangements to come drop it off that same day.

I give students a one time chance to turn in a late assignment with no questions asked. They cannot turn in a second late without loss of points, no excuse accepted. Some students use this right away but most like to get homework in and save the use of their option in case something tough really does come along. Most students end up never using the free pass.

Yes I give full credit only if I have offical documentation...forgetting to bring to class is a 0.
When h/w is checked in class and the student is absent it is a 0. (less documentation is presented the next time the student is in class.)

Hi Rosamond,
Let's keep our fingers crossed! Students habits typically carry over into the workplace.

I agree to the late policy with a student. Hopefully it will create a positive behavior that will lead to a successful student.

To me personally that would constatute as a valid reason for missing class and I would give them full credit as long as the assignment or assessment is handed in or completed by the next class period. If it is not handed in at the next class period, then I think I would start the late policy with that student.
