Variety of Students

How does everyone manage to fully engage the wide variety of students in their class? I have different ages, cultures, and cognitive abilities in my class. I have tried to ensure that the material is appropriate, and that each student has ample opportunity to voice their opinion or thoughts. It's been difficult to get everyone on board with some classwork though. I'm interested to hear other experiences and methods!

Hi Michael,
I have learned once a student's learning style has been discovered, it helps tremendously for when the instructor is teaching a concept.

Finding out the strengths and weaknesses of each student can help when explaining topics such as reading the textbook. Knowing how students use a text to acquire information can help instructors develop strategies to improve understanding of textbook information and thus level the field of play for all students in the class.

I too am interested in this type of feedback. I have classes where the skill levels are very disproportionate. I am planning on changing the seating so that those that are self-paced sit in the back of class so that they are still accessible but not as frequently distracted. I'm also going to allow that group to wear a headset if they would like when it is not lecture time. I hope my new plans are productive ones.
