Whenever a student picks up a call in class I make it my objective to the stop the class and make them aware that we are all waiting for him.

No students likes that and so the rest are encouraged to stop with the phones in class.

Hi Bonnie,
You are right! All faculty members should enforce the policy, otherwise it makes those who are enforcing the policy out to be the bad guy. The DOE needs to swiftly and quickly deal with those instrutors who are not enforcing policies.

I agree with a previous post, students need to learn that the cell phone is not appropriate in the workplace - clinical setting. A lot of my students are single moms, and they need to be available to their children. If there is a situation going on with their children I tell them to let their site know, they can excuse themself for a few moments to check their phone after checking with their clinical instructor if this is a good time. Otherwise check phones at a break or lunch.

We also have a no cell phone policy in our classrooms, and I agree wtih the verbal warning, written warning, and send them to see the program chair if it continues. Much of the difficulty lies in the fact that our faculty are inconsistent in enforcing the policy, which creates room for argument from the students.

Hi Dwayne,
I would handle it just like they would in the workplace. You have had several warnings; you are no longer a student in this class.
Patricia

Hi Dwayne,
I certainly understand what you are saying! We should be able to give adult students some leeway, but they too take full advantage just like children. In the real world rules are in place and must be abided by or else.
Patricia

I hate to set up such strict rules because we are all suppose to be adults. I feel sometimes that I am dealing with grade school students.I should not have to guide their every step while in the class room. It can be frustrating sometimes. Some students want to flirt with the rules. When they get caught, they then want to call foul.

first time, verbal warning and a reminder of class room rules and expectations. Second time, written warning, third time, dismissed from class and escorted to report to department chairperson.... then it is out of my hands....
I have quite often told students that if they abuse the rule of no cell phones, they will need to "check" them in with me at the beginning of class... and will give them back to them at break and then they will check them back in until the end of class...after that they usually follow thru... one bad apple spoils it for everyone!

Hi Keri,
In my classes cell phones are discussed on the first day. Cell phones are not allowed. I have caught students using their cell phones to cheat on exams. I explain that it isn't fair to the other students who do study and are prepared, it is their career they are jepordizing... I also explain that there are a lot of workplaces that do not allow cellphones on the job. If a student is caught using their cell phone during class, they are warned the first time, written up the second time and asked to leave and speak to the program chair the third time.

We also have a policy that states that use of cell phones in any form (texting, making calls, etc.)is unacceptable in the classroom. However, there are students that like to try to bend and even break this rule. My question would be; how do you handle this situation with students who continue to use cell phones in the classroom even though they know that it is against school policy?

Hi Keri,
Wow, at my institution students learn there that cell phones are unacceptable while in the classroom, thus preparing them for cell phone use in the work place.
