use more hands on

use models and power point and pictures

Hi Margaet,
Students love hands-on. Most students learn better by doing. It is very important to teach the skill and why the students need to know the skill.
Patricia

I am a CNA Program Coordinator. Our teachers use hands on every day. We teach the skills and the rationale behind them, then they have a lab where the practice with each other on the skills they were taught that day. They really enjoy working on those skills they have just learned and it helps them remember them when it's time to go to clinicals.

Hi Roger,
I love this idea! It is very interactive, and the students are learning as if it is really taking place in the workplace. This activity is very practical for students.

In my IT networking class, I assign a different student each week to act as the Network Administrator. We use a real or virtual server with a data show projector for all students to see. The admin performs all server-side class activities for the day, with instructor assistance, while the other students interact doing the client-side activities.
I find that the students really learn more, and become more interested when you put them on the spot to perform in a real-world, but relaxed environment. Also, this creates teamwork and overcomes any fears.

I agree, and students tend to get a bit more excited. It's one lecturing and demostrating, but when it comes to the real thing they are more excited.

Using student teach back is very helpful...it allows the students to be open to more options than "just do what the teacher says"...never know how a different perspective can be more effective than others because of different learning styles.

had an office emergency unit and the Medical
students gave demonstrations...a very interesting
format and class

I like to simulate as much as I can...have even
used "demo" software programs for this.

Hi Kay,
I have tried it! It is a very effective technique. It is amazing how well most students can present and how creative they are. Students tend to really understand their peers.

David what kind of hand-on activities do you provide?

I often use case studies and/or teach backs.

I have found using student teach back very helpful. They not only engage the students but also provide 'speach' practice. Have you tried it?

"Hands on" is awesome when the timeframe and the nature of the material is conducive to it! That's about as close as you can get to mimicking what the student will be doing in his or her particular field.

i ALWAYS FIND THAT THE MORE YOU HAVE THE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THEIR LEARNING WITH HANDS-ON ACTIVITES, THE MORE FUN THE STUDENTS HAVE LEARNING. IN ADDITION, ADULT STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE SOCAIL INTERACTION AND THIS HELPS BUILD INTERACTIONS WITHIN A SAFE, LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. WHENEVER STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO TEACH OTHER STUDENTS THE GREATER THE LEARNING RETENTION.
